Maui Timeshare 2026: Lahaina vs Wailea — Which Side of the Island to Buy
Maui has two main timeshare zones: Lahaina/Ka’anapali on the west coast, and Wailea on the south coast. Both are spectacular. Both have premium brands. But they’re 90 minutes apart and offer different experiences. This 2026 deep dive explains the differences and helps you choose.
Maui geography
Maui is roughly figure-8 shaped. West Maui has Lahaina town and Ka’anapali Beach. South Maui has Kihei (mid-range) and Wailea (premium). Drive between them: 60-90 minutes around the southern shore. Each side has distinct climate, vibe and price point.
Lahaina / Ka’anapali (West)
- Vibe: historic whaling town (Lahaina), Kaanapali resort strip (commercial premium).
- Beaches: 3-mile Ka’anapali Beach is iconic. Black Rock for snorkeling.
- Climate: warm year-round, slightly drier than south.
- Restaurants: Front Street historic Lahaina has dozens of restaurants, shops.
- Activities: whale watching (Dec-Apr), snorkeling, sunset cruises.
- Note 2023+: Lahaina town was severely damaged by August 2023 wildfire. Reconstruction ongoing through 2026. Many resorts north of Lahaina (Ka’anapali) untouched and operating normally.
Wailea (South)
- Vibe: master-planned luxury enclave. Quieter than Ka’anapali. Resort-focused.
- Beaches: Wailea Beach, Mokapu, Polo. All gorgeous, less crowded than Ka’anapali.
- Climate: drier and slightly warmer than west Maui, more sunshine.
- Restaurants: in resort-village called Wailea (smaller than Lahaina), some standalone fine dining.
- Activities: golf at Wailea Golf Club, snorkeling Molokini Crater (boat from Maalaea), spa.
- 2023 fires: not affected. Continued operating normally.

Marriott Maui Ocean Club vs Westin Ka’anapali? Both excellent. Marriott Maui Ocean Club is slightly more premium with better resale retention. Westin has both buildings (south and north) for more options.
Is Wailea worth the higher cost? If you value quiet luxury and reliable sunshine, yes. If you want walking-distance dining variety, Ka’anapali is better.
